Maroons Split at Wheaton
WHEATON, Ill. -- The University of Chicago softball team split a doubleheader at Wheaton (Ill.) College Thursday afternoon, taking the first game 5-2 before losing game two 8-3.
Chicago scored three runs after two outs in the top of the seventh inning en route to its game one victory. Sophomore pitcher Kathleen Duffy (Hoffman Estates, Ill./ Barrington) drove in the go-ahead run before freshman catcher Sara Whaley (Bakersfield, Calif./ Christian) followed with a two-run single.
Duffy went the distance, scattering five hits over seven innings, to raise her record to 4-5. She struck out four without allowing a walk.
The Maroons (9-13) scored all three of their runs in the opening frame in the nightcap, but Wheaton answered with a five-run second inning and a three-run sixth. Whaley went 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
Junior shortstop Jen Jacobson (Schaumburg, Ill./ Conant) went 1-for-4 in game one and 2-for-4 in the second game to extend her hitting streak to 17 games.
