Three Maroons Named UAA Athletes of the Week
CHICAGO -- For the second time in as many weeks, three University of Chicago student-athletes have garnered University Athletic Association Athlete of the Week recognition.
Junior Shane Carlson (Houston, Texas/ Memorial) was honored in men's swimming & diving after taking top honors in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:00.74), 200-yard breaststroke (2:21.52), and 400-yard individual medley (4:11.61) in addition to swimming a leg of three first-place relay teams (200-yard freestyle/1:29.70; 400-yard medley/3:43.77; 800-yard freestyle/7:15.38) as the Maroons led the field at the Jan. 18-19 Chicago Invitational.
In women's basketball, sophomore forward Molly Hackney (East Lansing, Mich./ Lansing Catholic) averaged 18.0 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.5 blocks as the Maroons swept a pair of Association opponents. Hackney collected 17 points and eight boards in a 67-59 win over Case Western Reserve University (Jan. 18), before finishing with 19 points and nine rebounds in a 54-52 win over Emory University (Jan. 20). She scored a pair of key baskets in the final 3:14 in the Maroons’ come-from-behind victory over Emory.
Freshman wrestler David Kneisel (Barrington, Ill./ Barrington) was the runner-up in the 174-pound weight class at Elmhurst College’s 12-team Al Hanke Invitational (Jan. 19). Kneisel pinned his first two opponents before dropping a 4-2 decision to the top seed in the championship bout.
