Three Maroons Earn UAA Weekly Honors
CHICAGO -- Three University of Chicago student-athletes have been named the University Athletic Association Athlete of the Week in their respective sports, the conference announced today.
Senior designated hitter Dominik Meyer (River Forest, Ill./ Oak Park-River Forest) was recognized in baseball, while senior Zach Rodgers (Nashville, Tenn./ University School) and sophomore Claire Ray (Park Ridge, Ill./ St. Ignatius) were cited in men's and women's outdoor track & field, respectively.
In his final collegiate at-bat, Meyer belted a two-run home run with two outs in the top of the eighth inning to cap a come-from-behind effort as the Maroons wrapped up their 2008 campaign with a 3-2 victory over host Illinois Institute of Technology.
Meyer, who was 2-for-4 in the contest, ended the season as the team’s top hitter with a .352 batting average, 17 runs batted in, and a .466 slugging percentage.
Rodgers reached the NCAA Division III provisional-qualifying standard in the triple jump at Chicago's Penultimate Invitational. He won the event with a leap of 14.32 meters, the eighth-best performance to date in Division III.
Ray registered a pair of national provisional-qualifying marks at the Penultimate Invitational. She finished second in the discus with a throw of 46.23 meters, the eighth-best distance to date in Division III, and captured the hammer throw with a mark of 48.59 meters.
