Three Maroons Earn UAA Weekly Honors

CHICAGO -- Three members of University of Chicago fall sports teams -- junior football player John Kiernan (Joliet, Ill./ Joliet Catholic), junior women's soccer player Maggie Costich (Wilton, Conn./ Wilton), and sophomore football player Ryan Verissimo (Skokie, Ill./ Niles West) -- have been recognized as the University Athletic Association Athletes of the Week in their respective sports.

In his first game as the Maroons' starting quarterback, Kiernan threw two touchdown passes and ran for two more as Chicago kicked off its 2007 campaign with a 41-10 win over host Concordia University Chicago. Kiernan completed 12 of 24 attempts for 158 yards without an interception and rushed for 124 yards on 15 carries.

Costich led the Maroons' defensive effort as they defeated 16th-ranked DePauw University 1-0 in overtime and 23rd-ranked Calvin College 4-0 before edging St.Olaf College 2-1. Chicago allowed just 17 shots in the three contests.

Verissimo connected on five of six extra-point attempts and averaged 37.5 yards on four punts – including a career-long of 51 yards – in Chicago's 41-10 win over Concordia Chicago.
