Maroons Capture Midway Classic Title
CHICAGO -- Tournament most valuable player, sophomore forward Molly Hackney (East Lansing, Mich./ Lansing Catholic), collected 25 points and 10 rebounds to lead the University of Chicago women's basketball team to a 77-67 win over Baruch College in the championship game of the Midway Classic Sunday at the Ratner Athletics Center.
Hackney, who connected on 11 of 21 attempts from the field and three of four from the foul line, also blocked a Midway Classic record six shots. Her 25 points marked the second-highest total by a Maroon in the tournament's 11-year history.
Chicago (2-0) took the lead for good late in the first half when freshman forward Dana Kaplan's (Commack, N.Y./ Commack) three-pointer put the Maroons on top 30-27 with 3:42 left in the period.
The Maroons led 37-31 at the half before building their largest edge of the game, 51-38, on a three-pointer from junior guard Alex Leach (Gurnee, Ill./ Warren) with 15:11 to go.
Baruch cut the gap to 52-48 on Idelissa Lluveres's jumper at the 11:25 mark, but Chicago answered with an 11-5 run to expand its lead back to double digits, 63-53 with 5:48 remaining in the game.
Senior guard Nofi Mojidi (Silver Spring, Md./ Bullis School) joined Hackney on the all-tournament team after contributing 17 points, four assists, and three steals.
Leach and senior guard Lori Tanaka (Chicago, Ill./ Lane Tech) each finished with 11 points.
All-tournament team selections Dominique McClendon and Chiresse Paradise tallied 22 and 17 points, respectively, for Baruch. Paradise also matched a tournament record with nine assists.
Both teams shot well from the free throw line. Chicago connected on 16 of 20 attempts (80.0%), while the Bearcats converted 16 of 19 tries (84.2%).
