Maroons Fall to Brandeis
BOSTON -- Brandeis University's Jaime Capra scored a game-high 23 points to lead the host Judges to a 60-56 win over the University of Chicago women's basketball team in University Athletic Association play Friday night at Auerbach Arena.
Chicago (11-4 overall, 2-2 UAA) held Brandeis (11-4, 2-2) without a field goal for the game's final 5:15, but the Judges connected on 10 of 14 free throw attempts in the last 4:26.
Amanda Wells put Brandeis in the lead to stay, 55-54, when she hit one of two foul shots with 2:04 left on the clock. Capra sealed the win with a pair of free throws that put Brandeis on top 58-54 with 30 seconds left.
Chicago fell behind 10-2 in the game's opening minutes and trailed 40-27 at the half.
A three-point play by senior guard Lori Tanaka (Chicago, Ill./ Lane Tech) capped a 16-3 Chicago run that evened the score at 43-43 at the 10:25 mark.
Chicago took its first lead of the second half when junior guard Alex Leach's (Gurnee, Ill./ Warren) three-pointer gave the Maroons a short-lived 46-43 edge with 8:54 remaining.
Brandeis countered with an 8-1 run to take a 51-47 advantage with 4:26 left in the contest.
Sophomore guard Jamie Stinson's (Topeka, Kan./ Shawnee Heights) three-pointer brought the Maroons back to even, 54-54, at the 2:36 mark, but the Judges would outscore Chicago 6-2 the rest of the way.
Capra, the only Brandeis player to net double digits, was 8-15 from the floor and 7-10 from the foul line as the Judges notched their seventh consecutive win over Chicago.
Senior guard Nofi Mojidi (Silver Spring, Md./ Bullis School) paced the Maroons with 14 points, while Leach finished with 12.
