Maroons Defeat Case in UAA Home Opener
CHICAGO -- Sophomore forward Molly Hackney (East Lansing, Mich./ Lansing Catholic) led four Maroons in double figures with 17 points as the University of Chicago women's basketball team opened the home portion of its University Athletic Association schedule with a 67-59 win over Case Western Reserve University Friday at the Ratner Athletics Center.
Chicago (10-3 overall, 1-1 UAA) fell behind 17-12 midway through the opening period before rallying to take a 28-24 lead at the break.
The Maroons held the advantage until Mary Herendeen's three-pointer put Case (8-5, 1-1) on top 34-33 with 16:36 left in the contest.
The next 6:32 featured six lead changes and five ties until Hackney made a layup at the 9:02 mark to snap a 47-47 deadlock and give the Maroons the lead for good. Hackney's basket sparked a 15-4 run which put Chicago up 62-51 with 3:45 to play.
Ashley Horton's layup at the 2:10 mark cut the Chicago lead to five, 64-59, but the Maroons scored the game's final three points en route to their fourth consecutive home victory.
Junior guard Alex Leach (Gurnee, Ill./ Warren) and sophomore forward Anna Woods (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./ Lower Merion) scored 15 and 12 points, respectively, off the bench as Chicago reserves outscored Case's non-starters by a 32-10 margin. Woods's 12 points marked her career high.
Senior guard Nofi Mojidi (Silver Spring, Md./ Bullis School) also finished in double figures for the Maroons with 10 points.
Horton paced the Spartans, who lost for just the second time in their last nine outings, with 15 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Herendeen added 12 points, while Colleen Martin and Caitlin Henry each chipped in 10.
Hackney pulled down a team-best eight rebounds to go along with three assists. Sophomore guard Jamie Stinson (Topeka, Kan./ Shawnee Heights) matched her career high with eight assists.
