Maroons Move into Four-Way Tie for UAA Lead

CLEVELAND -- Led by freshman guard Dana Kaplan's (Commack, N.Y./ Commack) 15 points, the 24th-ranked University of Chicago women's basketball team overcame a 15-point first-half deficit en route to a 59-54 win over University Athletic Association rival Case Western Reserve University Sunday afternoon.

The victory coupled with Washington (Mo.) University's 68-66 loss at Emory University moves Chicago (17-5 overall, 8-3 UAA) into a four-way tie atop the UAA standings. Chicago, Washington, Brandeis University and the University of Rochester all stand at 8-3 in league play with three games remaining.

Case (11-11, 4-7) jumped out to a 20-5 lead with 8:28 left in the first half, but the Maroons closed out the period with a 17-6 run to trim the Spartans' lead to 26-22 at the intermission.

Kaplan gave the Maroons the lead for good, 27-26, on a layup with 17:50 remaining in the contest.

Chicago then got six points from senior guard Nofi Mojidi (Silver Spring, Md./ Bullis School) and four from sophomore forward Anna Woods (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./ Lower Merion) during a 13-2 run that put the Maroons on top 40-28 at the 12:54 mark.

A Kaplan three-pointer gave Chicago a 55-47 lead with 4:27 to go, but the Spartans scored the game's next seven points to pull within a point, 55-54, on Ashley Horton's layup with 1:37 on the clock.

Sophomore forward Molly Hackney (East Lansing, Mich./ Lansing Catholic) helped Chicago seal the win with four points in the final minute, including a pair of free throws with two seconds left.

Kaplan hit three 3-point field goals en route to her career scoring high. She also collected six rebounds and a pair of assists in 20 minutes off the bench.

Woods finished with 13 points, nine rebounds, and three blocks, while Hackney had 12 points, eight boards, and four blocks. Mojidi added 10 points.

Horton paced Case with 14 points and game-high 14 rebounds. Caitlin Henry contributed 13 points.
