Maroons Win Midway Classic Semifinal
CHICAGO -- Sophomore forward Molly Hackney (East Lansing, Mich./ Lansing Catholic) scored a game-high 12 points as the University of Chicago women's basketball team opened its 2007-08 campaign with a 72-63 win over Concordia (Minn.) College in the first round of the Midway Classic Saturday afternoon at the Ratner Athletics Center.
Chicago (1-0) fell behind early, as the Cobbers (0-1) took a 17-10 lead seven minutes into the contest. The Maroons then outscored Concordia 34-9 during the final 12:21 of the half to take a 44-26 lead at the break.
Chicago started the second half with a 13-4 run and led by as many as 30 points (66-36) midway through the period. The Cobbers outscored the Maroons 15-2 during the game's final 5:07.
Hackney connected on eight of 10 attempts from the foul line en route to her 12-point performance.
Senior guard Nofi Mojidi (Silver Spring, Md./ Bullis School) was the only other Maroon to reach double figures as 12 different players scored. Mojidi collected 10 points on the day.
Sara Sorbo matched Hackney for game-high scoring honors with 12 points. Melanie Hageman and Erica Nord each added 11.
Chicago will take on Baruch College in Sunday's Midway Classic Championship tilt. The Bearcats defeated Whitworth University 74-58 in Saturday's other semifinal contest.
