Chicago Edges Emory on Late Basket
CHICAGO -- Junior guard Alex Leach (Gurnee, Ill./ Warren) scored the winning basket with 30 seconds left in the game as the University of Chicago women's basketball team rallied for a 54-52 win over Emory University Sunday at the Ratner Athletics Center.
With Chicago trailing 52-51, Leach hit a driving layup to give the Maroons a 53-52 lead with 30 seconds showing on the clock.
With five seconds remaining, senior guard Lori Tanaka (Chicago, Ill./ Lane Tech) hit the first of two free throw attempts but missed the second. Emory gathered the rebound, but a long three-point attempt fell short as time expired.
Chicago (11-3 overall, 2-1 UAA) trailed most of the first half before a basket from senior guard Nofi Mojidi (Silver Spring, Md./ Bullis School) with 11 seconds left in the period gave the Maroons a 28-26 edge at the intermission.
Emory's Kate Corkle hit a three-pointer in the opening minute of the second stanza to put the Eagles on top 29-28.
Emory extended its lead to nine (43-34) -- the largest for either team -- on an Erica Kaplan three-pointer at the 11:45 mark. Kaplan led the Eagles with 13 points on the afternoon.
Chicago tied the game at 47-47 on a Mojidi layup with 6:05 to go. Mojidi finished with 12 points.
Kaplan's third three-point field goal of the day with 2:56 remaining gave Emory a 52-49 lead, but the Eagles would be kept off the scoreboard the rest of the way.
Sophomore forward Molly Hackney (East Lansing, Mich./ Lansing Catholic) led all scorers with 19 points, including two key Chicago field goals in the game's final 3:14. She also collected nine rebounds and three blocked shots as the Maroons won their fifth straight home game.
Led by freshman forward Karly Kasper's (Palos Park, Ill./ Stagg) game-high 11 rebounds, the Maroons outrebounded Emory 49-38.
LeShonda Lillard contributed 11 points and a game-high four assists for the Eagles.
