Chicago Rallies to Defeat #8 NYU

NEW YORK CITY -- Sophomore forward Molly Hackney (East Lansing, Mich./ Lansing Catholic) scored 12 of her team-high 16 points in the second half as the University of Chicago women's basketball team overcame an eight-point halftime deficit to upend eighth-ranked New York University 72-68 in University Athletic Association play Sunday at the Coles Sports Center.

Chicago (12-4 overall, 3-2 UAA) trailed for most of the first half before taking a 21-19 lead on a basket by senior guard Nofi Mojidi (Silver Spring, Md./ Bullis School) with 5:31 left in the period. Mojidi tallied 14 points on the day.

NYU (13-3, 2-3) closed out the half with a 16-6 run to take a 35-27 lead at the intermission.

Sparked by a pair of three-pointers from junior guard Alex Leach (Gurnee, Ill./ Warren), Chicago outscored the Violets 8-1 during the first 1:46 of the second half, cutting the NYU lead to 36-35.

NYU, which began the day ranked eighth by D3hoops.com and ninth by USA Today/ESPN, pushed its lead back to six, 45-39, on Bianca Storts's layup at the 15:38 mark.

Chicago scored the next seven points, capped by sophomore guard Kaitlin Devaney's (San Diego, Calif./ Scripps Ranch) layup with 11:11 left, to take its first lead of the second stanza, 46-45.

The Maroons matched their largest lead of the afternoon at the 5:47 mark when freshman forward Karly Kasper's (Palos Park, Ill./ Stagg) free throw put Chicago on top 61-51.

Chicago led 66-57 with 3:56 to go when NYU launched a 9-3 run to close the gap to 69-66 with 52 seconds left.

NYU's Jessica McEntee made it a one-point game, 69-68, when she sunk a pair of free throws with 10 seconds left. McEntee led all scorers with 25 points to go along with 14 rebounds.

After an NYU foul with nine seconds remaining, Leach buried two free throws to give Chicago a 71-68 edge. Leach finished the game with 12 points.

With one second to play, NYU missed its final shot and sophomore guard Jamie Stinson (Topeka, Kan./ Shawnee Heights) gathered the rebound. Stinson then made the second of two free throw attempts to seal the win.

After being outshot 54% to 36% in the first half, Chicago enjoyed a 47% to 25% shooting advantage in the second stanza. The Maroons also posted a 25-19 edge on the boards in the second half after being outrebounded 19-16 in the first 20 minutes.

Kasper and sophomore forward Anna Woods (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./ Lower Merion) both came off the bench to lead the Maroons with seven rebounds each.
