Maroons Fall at #8 Rochester
ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The eighth-ranked University of Rochester outscored the University of Chicago 12-6 during the game's final five minutes en route to a 54-48 victory in University Athletic Association women's basketball play Sunday at the Palestra.
With the score tied 42-42 with 4:43 left in the contest, Rochester (17-1 overall, 7-0 UAA) launched a 7-0 run, capped by a three-point basket by Melissa Alwardt with 3:53 left to play.
A pair of layups by senior guard Nofi Mojidi (Silver Spring, Md./ Bullis School) 37 seconds apart cut the Yellowjackets' lead to 49-46 with 2:10 remaining.
The score held at 49-46 until Alwardt sunk a pair of foul shots with 31 seconds to go. Another Mojidi basket made it a one-possession game, 51-48, with 20 seconds left, but Helen Baroody answered with two free throws for Rochester just three seconds later to seal the win.
Rochester converted nine of 10 free throw attempts during the game's final 5:05 and was 16 for 20 for the game. Chicago (13-5, 4-3) was just six of 13 on the day.
Chicago held a 48-34 rebounding edge, but was plagued by 25 turnovers that led to 17 Rochester points.
Julie Marriott led all scorers with 19 points for Rochester, while Alex Porter contributed 10 rebounds and nine points.
With 11 points, Mojidi was the only Maroon to finish in double figures.
Rochester notched its fourth series victory in the past five meetings and third straight at the Palestra.
