Maroons Advance to NCAA Round of 16
STEVENS POINT, Wis. -- Senior guard Nofi Mojidi (Silver Spring, Md./ Bullis School) and sophomore forward Molly Hackney (East Lansing, Mich./ Lansing Catholic) combined for 31 of the Maroons' 65 points as the University of Chicago defeated St. Norbert College 65-52 in the second round of the 2008 NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship Saturday at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
The victory moves Chicago (22-5) into the national round of 16 to be held next Friday and Saturday at a site to be announced Monday morning. The Maroons will take on Kean University (27-3), which defeated Brandeis University 95-61 in second-round play Saturday evening.
Chicago dominated the first half as it outshot St. Norbert (22-5) 50% to 15% and outrebounded the Green Knights 25-11 en route to taking a 32-16 lead.
A three-point basket by senior guard Lori Tanaka (Chicago, Ill./ Lane Tech) gave Chicago its largest lead of the game, 49-25, with 12:24 remaining.
The Maroons led 52-31 at the 11:10 mark when St. Norbert went on a 13-0 run to cut the gap to 52-44 with 8:03 to go.
Mojidi then scored six points during a 9-1 Chicago run as the Maroons raised their lead to 61-45 at the 4:38 mark.
Mojidi led all scorers with 17 points. Hackney finished with 14 points and notched game highs with eight rebounds and five blocked shots.
Chicago shot 50% from the field for the game, while limiting the Green Knights to a 32.7% effort from the floor.
Stefanie Bunday paced St. Norbert with 13 points, six steals, and three assists.
