Maroons Fall to Whitewater in Top-25 Matchup
CHICAGO -- Kelsey Hendrickson scored a game-high 15 points to lead the 10th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater to a 62-53 non-conference win over the 18th-ranked University of Chicago women's basketball team at the Ratner Athletics Center.
The loss ended Chicago's 30-game non-conference winning streak which dated back to the 2004-05 campaign.
Wisconsin-Whitewater (4-0), which is ranked 10th by D3hoops.com and 15th by USA Today/ESPN, opened up a 33-22 lead after one period.
Chicago (4-1) cut the gap to five, 42-37, on a layup by freshman forward Karly Kasper (Palos Heights, Ill./ Stagg) with 12:00 left in the game.
Three-pointers from Hendrickson and Trisha Thill 47 seconds apart gave the Warhawks a 54-42 advantage at the 5:14 mark.
Senior guard Lori Tanaka's (Chicago, Ill./ Lane Tech) layup pulled Chicago to within three, 54-51, with 2:23 to play, but the Maroons could get no closer as Wisconsin-Whitewater connected on eight of 12 free throw attempts during the game's final 1:13.
Sophomore forward Molly Hackney (East Lansing, Mich./ Lansing Catholic) paced the Maroons with 12 points and six rebounds. Senior forward Nicaya Rapier (Munster, Ind./ Bishop Noll) contributed eight points, eight boards, and four assists in a losing effort.
Meghan Schmidt finished with 12 points off the bench for the Warhawks.
Both teams posted similar statistics. Chicago shot 35% from the field and 27% from three-point range (4-15), while the Warhawks shot 38% from the floor and 29% from behind the arc (6-21).
The Maroons enjoyed a 42-37 edge on the boards.
