Chicago Places 12th at Cornell Invite
MOUNT VERNON, Iowa -- The University of Chicago wrestling team, competing in eight of the 10 weight classes, finished 12th at the 13-team Cornell (Iowa) College Matman Invitational, a two-day event featuring six of the top 30 teams in the NCAA Division III.
Sophomore Troy Carlson (Cary, Ill./ Cary Grove) was the Maroons' lone place finisher, as he won four of five bouts en route to a third-place performance in the 165-pound weight class.
Seeded fourth, Carlson won his first two bouts before falling to the nation's sixth-ranked 165-pounder, Coe College's Tyler Burkle, in the semifinals. Carlson rebounded with a pair of victories in the consolation bracket, including a 10-4 decision in the third-place match.
Three other Maroons, junior 184-pounder Justin Lucas (Medford, N.J./ Shawnee), freshman 165-pounder Alex Murray (Rockford, Mich./ Rockford), and freshman heavyweight Ryan Hatten (Florissant, Mo./ McCleur North), came within a victory of placing.
Lucas and Murray each split four matches, while Hatten won four of six bouts. Lucas and Hatten each notched a pair of wins by fall in the consolation bracket.
Seventh-ranked Coe won the event with 164.5 points. #11 Buena Vista University and #15 Cornell (Iowa) were next with 129.5 and 96.5, respectively.
