Maroons Place Six at Elmhurst Invite

ELMHURST, Ill. -- Led by junior Ben Hart (Wood Dale, Ill./ Fenton) and freshman David Kneisel (Barrington, Ill./ Barrington), the University of Chicago wrestling team placed individuals in six weight classes en route to a fourth-place finish at Elmhurst College's 12-team Al Hanke Invitational on Saturday.

Hart and Kneisel were the runners-up at 133 and 174 pounds, respectively.

The second seed, Hart won his first three bouts before falling to the top seed, Elmhurst's Ben Salabura, by a 5-1 decision in the title match.

Kneisel, the #2 seed, pinned his first two opponents before dropping a 4-2 decision to the #1 seed, Concordia (Minn.) University's Luke Vetsch in the championship bout.

Junior Lance Contento (Tucson, Ariz./ Catalina Foothills) and sophomore Troy Carlson (Cary, Ill./ Cary Grove) wrestled their way to third-place showings at 174 and 165 pounds, respectively, while junior Justin Lucas (Medford, N.J./ Shawnee) claimed fourth place at 184.

Contento lost in the semifinals, then won by decision and fall in the consolation bracket.

Seeded fourth, Carlson advanced to the semifinals where he lost by fall to the NCAA Division III's sixth-ranked Ben Hoover of Maranatha Baptist Bible College. Hoover was named the tournamen'ts Most Outstanding Wrestler.

Lucas won three of his first four matches before falling 8-6 to the tournament's top seed, Augustana (Ill.) College's Brian Kerr, in the third-place matchup.

Unseeded freshmen Mason May (Yelm, Wash./ Yelm) and Chris Oster (Homer Glen, Ill./ Lockport) each split six bouts as they notched sixth-place finishes at 141 and 149 pounds, respectively.

17th-ranked Olivet College won the team title with 121 points, followed by Concordia (Minn.) with 110.5, #25 Elmhurst (109.5), and Chicago (68).
