Four Maroons Place at Great Lakes Regional

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. -- Four University of Chicago wrestlers earned top-six place finishes as the Maroons captured seventh place at the 15-team Great Lakes Regional Saturday at St. John's University.

Junior Ben Hart (Wood Dale, Ill./ Fenton) won three of four bouts en route to a third-place showing at 133 pounds.

Seeded fourth, Hart (19-16) won his first bout by decision before losing by fall to the top seed, Augsburg College's Travis Lang, in the semifinals. He then notched a pair of decisions in the consolation bracket, capped by a 1-0 victory over Concordia (Minn.) College's Joe Leacox in the third-place matchup.

Freshman Ryan Hatten (Florissant, Mo./ McCleur North) finished fourth in the heavyweight competition.

Hatten, the seventh seed, won his first match by decision before upsetting second-seeded Adam Sutter of Lakeland College 3-1 in overtime in the second round. After falling 10-5 to third-seeded Mark Corsello of Elmhurst College in the semifinals, Hatten (20-10) split a pair of bouts in the consolation bracket.

Sophomore Troy Carlson (Cary, Ill./ Cary Grove) and freshman David Kneisel (Barrington, Ill./ Barrington) notched sixth-place finishes at 165 and 174 pounds, respectively.

Carlson (25-12), who was seeded fourth, won two of three contested bouts, but lost a pair by medical forfeit.

Seeded seventh, Kneisel (17-16) went 2-3 on the day. He defeated the sixth-seed and lost to the second, fourth, and fifth seeds along the way.

Augsburg edged Elmhurst 129.5 to 116.5 for the team title. Concordia (Minn.) College (114), North Central College (109), St. John's (87.5), Lakeland (82.5), and Chicago (47.5) rounded out the top seven teams.
