Chicago Splits Four at Border Brawl

WHITEWATER, Wis. -- The University of Chicago wrestling team split four dual matches Saturday at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater's eight-team Border Brawl.

In the opening match, the Maroons dropped a 25-13 decision to 10th-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater. Freshman David Kneisel (Barrington, Ill./ Barrington) won by fall at 174 pounds, and fellow first-year Ryan Hatten (Florissant, Mo./ McCleur North) notched a major decision at heavyweight. At 157 pounds, junior Spencer Burns (Cimarron, Kan./ Cimarron) posted a 9-3 decision.

Chicago fell to the 11th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point 36-9 in the second match. Sophomore Troy Carlson (Cary, Ill./ Cary Grove) provided the highlight of the contest with a 6-4 victory over the NCAA Division III's third-ranked Jake Wozniak at 165 pounds.

The Maroons rebounded by winning seven of the eight contested bouts in a 23-16 victory over Lakeland College. Kneisel and junior Jeff Harman (Boulder, Colo./ Boulder) recorded major decisions at 174 and 149 pounds, respectively.

Chicago closed out the day with a 25-10 win over the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. The final two bouts featured a major decision by junior Lance Contento (Tucson, Ariz./ Catalina Foothills) and a win-by-fall by Hatten.

Chicago now stands at 5-4 in dual match competition.
