Seven Maroons Net All-UAA Honors;
Coaching Staff Honored
CHICAGO -- Seven members of the University of Chicago women's soccer team have been named to the 2007 All-University Athletic Association Team, the conference announced today.
In addition, Head Coach Amy Reifert and Assistant Coach Bannon Stroud have been cited as the Association's Coaching Staff of the Year. Reifert, who owns a record of 213-81-34 in 17 years at Chicago, was recognized for the fifth time during her career.
Sophomore forward Brooke Bontz (Fort Collins, Colo./ Poudre) and sophomore midfielder Claire Gill (Los Altos Hills, Calif./ King's Academy) garnered All-UAA First-Team accolades.
Chicago's scoring leader, Bontz tallied seven goals with a pair of assists for 16 points. She notched four goals, including a game-winner, in UAA play.
Gill collected five goals and an assist on the season and matched Bontz with four goals in conference action. Two of her four UAA goals were game-winners.
Senior defender Amanda Catalano (Whitinsville, Mass./ Northbridge) and junior midfielder Olivia Ndyabagye (Albuquerque, N.M./ Sandia) were both selected to the All-Association Second Team.
Catalano helped anchor a Chicago defensive corps that allowed only 15 goals in 20 contests with 12 shutouts. She also contributed offensively, as she produced a team-high six assists along with a pair of goals.
Ndyabagye scored four goals and was credited with three assists on the season. She had a goal and a pair of assists in league competition.
Three Maroons -- senior goalkeeper Amanda Sutter (Irvine, Calif./ University), senior forward Christine Farmer (Pine City, N.Y./ Elmira Notre Dame), and junior defender Anne Scherer (Cincinnati, Ohio/ St. Ursula) -- received honorable mention accolades.
Sutter recorded a 0.71 goals against average with 10 shutouts. Farmer tallied five goals with one assist. Scherer, who had a goal and two assists, helped bolster the Maroons' defensive unit.
Chicago (12-4-4) advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament and was the runner-up in the UAA with a 4-1-2 mark in conference play in 2007.
