Chicago Routs Heidelberg in Season Debut
CHICAGO -- Freshman forward Sarah Loh (Grand Rapids, Mich./ Forest Hills Northern) scored a pair of goals, and senior forward Christine Farmer (Pine City, N.Y./ Elmira Notre Dame) added a goal and an assist as the 25th-ranked University of Chicago women's soccer team opened its 2007 season with a 6-0 non-conference win over Heidelberg College Saturday at Stagg Field.
The victory extended Chicago's home field winning streak to 18 matches and kept the Maroons undefeated at Stagg Field for the 33rd consecutive match (30-0-3). Chicago is now 36-1-1 in its last 38 home non-conference affairs.
Chicago (1-0) tallied three times in each half.
Junior midfielder Olivia Ndyabagye (Albuquerque, N.M./ Sandia) put the Maroons on the board just 7:47 into the contest when she converted a feed from junior midfielder Siggy Nachtergaele (Davis, Calif./ Davis).
Loh scored the first of her two goals off an assist from Farmer at 28:59. Just over four minutes later, senior midfielder Katherine Gasho (Simsbury, Conn./ Simsbury) notched her first career goal to give the Maroons a 3-0 lead at the half.
Farmer opened the scoring in the second half in the 56th minute when she gathered a deflected pass and fired the ball past Heidelberg (0-1) netminder Lauren Sweeney, who finished the match with 11 saves.
Chicago capped the scoring with two goals during a 4:16 span midway through the second period.
At the 67:01 mark, junior defender Anne Scherer (Cincinnati, Ohio/ St. Ursula) tallied her first career goal from 15 yards out following a scramble after a Chicago corner kick. Loh scored the game's final goal at 71:17 off an assist from sophomore forward Julie Bischoff (Rockford, Ill./ Boylan).
Loh became the third Chicago player since 2003 to score twice in her first career game, joining Renee Neuner (2002) and Farmer (2004).
Senior Amanda Sutter (Irvine, Calif./ University) and junior Polly Cline (Traverse City, Mich./ Central) combined on the shutout. Sutter made one save in 63 minutes before giving way to Cline for the game's final 27 minutes.
