Chicago Defeats #10 Washington 2-1
CHICAGO -- Sophomore forward Brooke Bontz (Fort Collins, Colo./ Poudre) scored twice in the game's final 15 minutes to lift the University of Chicago women's soccer team to a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over 10th-ranked Washington (Mo.) University in University Athletic Association play Saturday at Stagg Field.
The win bolsters Chicago's (11-4-3 overall, 4-1-2 UAA) chances for an at-large bid to the 2007 NCAA Division III Championship. Tournament pairings will be announced Monday morning, Nov. 5.
Washington (15-3, 5-2) scored the only goal of the first half when Caitlin Malone set up Caryn Rosoff's breakaway goal at the 26:19 mark.
Chicago, which outshot the Bears 10-4 in the second half, evened the score at 1-1 on a 20-yard blast from Bontz at the 74:15 mark.
Bontz then scored the winning goal from inside 10 yards with 8:20 left in the contest. Junior midfielder Olivia Ndyabagye (Albuquerque, N.M./ Sandia) and junior defender Anne Scherer (Cincinnati, Ohio/ St. Ursula) were credited with the assists.
With her second multiple-goal effort in her last three games, Bontz finished the regular season with a team-high seven goals.
Senior goalkeeper Amanda Sutter (Irvine, Calif./ University) made three saves as she raised her season record to 11-3-3.
Carrie Sear stopped four shots for Washington, which despite the loss finished atop the UAA standings with 15 points. Chicago was the runner-up with 14.
