Maroons Fall to Top-Ranked Wheaton in Double Overtime
CHICAGO -- Wheaton (Ill.) College's Brittany Bergh scored the second of her two goals in double overtime as the top-ranked Thunder defeated the University of Chicago women's soccer team 3-2 Saturday at Stagg Field.
With just under two minutes elapsed in the second overtime stanza, Wheaton's Taryne Lee fed Bergh for the winning goal.
Chicago forced overtime when freshman defender Katie Manuelli (Hightstown, N.J./ Peddie School) converted a corner kick from freshman defender Claire Denz (Wheaton, Ill./ North) with just five seconds left in regulation.
Wheaton, which extended its winning streak to 35 games, led 2-0 before the Maroons (8-4-3) scored twice in the game's final 11 minutes.
Libby Passailes scored the only goal of the first half on a header in the 23rd minute. Passailes then set up Bergh's first goal of the game in the 54th minute.
Chicago got on the board at 79:19 when sophomore forward Melissa Plesac (Hobart, Ind./ Hobart) took a cross from junior midfielder Olivia Ndyabagye (Albuquerque, N.M./ Sandia) and beat Wheaton netminder Kristin Eggert for her second goal of the year.
Eggert and her Chicago counterpart, senior Amanda Sutter (Irvine, Calif./ University) each made five saves.
