Maroons Capture 5th Place at UAA Championship
ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The University of Chicago women's swimming & diving team placed fifth at the 2008 University Athletic Association Championship held Wednesday through Saturday at the University of Rochester.
Freshman Ellie Elgamal (San Diego, Calif./ Bishop's School) won the 100- and 200-yard butterfly events with respective NCAA Division III provisional-qualifying times of 58.04 and 2:08.23. She also placed fifth in the 200-yard individual medley (2:12.74).
Sophomore Cassie O'Neill (Roseburg, Ore./ Roseburg) notched a pair of top-eight performances, as she finished fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.92) and seventh in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:29.54).
Two other Maroons finished among top the top eight in their respective events.
Freshman Charlotte Richman (Hoboken, N.J./ High Tech) placed sixth in the 50-yard freestyle (25.10), and fellow first-year Sarah Wynn (Wheaton, Ill./ Wheaton-Warrenville South) turned in a sixth-place showing in the 400-yard individual medley (4:44.07).
Emory University won its 17th overall Association championship, compiling 1,951 points for the four-day meet. Washington (Mo.) University edged out New York University in a battle for second place, compiling 1,284 points to the Violets’ 1,260. Carnegie Mellon University finished fourth with 1,117 points, followed by, Chicago (852), Case Western Reserve University (791), Rochester (740), and Brandeis University (588).
