Maroons Place Third at Chicagolands

NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- Junior Rachel Venezia (Canton, Mass./ Canton) and freshman Liz Lawton (North Easton, Mass./ Thayer Academy) won their respective events as the University of Chicago women's outdoor track & field team captured third place at the 22-team Chicagoland Championships Friday and Saturday at North Central College.

Venezia took top honors in the steeplechase with an NCAA Division III provisional-qualifying time of 11:07.11, while Lawton clocked a time of 18:01.90 to lead the field in the 5,000-meter run competition.

Three other Maroons notched national provisional-qualifying performances: senior Appie Hirve (Burke, Va./ Jefferson) in the triple jump (11.36 m/3rd place), sophomore Nicole Murphy (Coppell, Texas/ Coppell) in the shot put (13.14 m/3rd), and sophomore Claire Ray (Park Ridge, Ill./ St. Ignatius) in the discus (42.68 m/2nd).

Hirve and Ray each finished fifth in a second event, Hirve in the high jump (1.57 m) and Ray in the shot put (12.47 m).

Freshman Stephanie Omueti (Chicago, Ill./ Whitney Young) placed fourth in the 100- and 200-meter dash (12.56, 25.43).

DePaul Univeristy edged Northern Illinois University 141-139.5 for the team title. Chicago placed third -- and first among Division III schools -- with 91.5 points.
