Chicago Finishes Second at IWU Invite
BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- The University of Chicago women's indoor track & field team was the runner-up at the 10-team Bob Keck Invitational Saturday at Illinois Wesleyan University.
Sophomores Nicole Murphy (Coppell, Texas/ Coppell) and Claire Ray (Park Ridge, Ill./ St. Ignatius) posted NCAA Division III provisional-qualifying performances in the shot put competition.
Murphy finished second in the event with a 12.83-meter heave, while Ray's distance of 12.81 meters was good for third place. Ray also captured third place in the weight throw (14.61).
Junior Rachel Venezia (Canton, Mass./ Canton) was Chicago's lone event winner, as she took top honors in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 18:17.67. Freshman Liz Lawton (North Easton, Mass./ Thayer Academy) finished second in the event (18:24.75).
Three other Maroons recorded second-place finishes: senior Appie Hirve (Burke, Va./ Jefferson Science & Math) in the triple jump (10.97 m), freshman Bianca Scott (Excelsior, Minn./ Minnetonka) in the high jump (1.55 m), and freshman Stephanie Omueti (Chicago, Ill./ Whitney Young) in the 200-meter dash (26.21).
Freshman Erin Cary (Latrobe, Pa./ Greater Latrobe) placed third in the 3,000-meter run (11:04.47).
Illinois Wesleyan won the event with 138.5 points. Chicago was next with 97.
