Chicago Captures UAA Championship
CLEVELAND -- Four Maroons won conference titles as the University of Chicago women's indoor track & field team won the 2008 University Athletic Association Championship Friday and Saturday at Case Western Reserve University.
Chicago edged Washington (Mo.) University 151-148 to capture its first-ever UAA indoor championship. Emory University placed third with 98 points.
Sophomore Nicole Murphy (Coppell, Texas/ Coppell) set a UAA record and met an NCAA Division III provisional-qualifying standard en route to winning the shot put competition with a 13.31-meter throw.
Sophomore Claire Ray (Park Ridge, Ill./ St. Ignatius) and freshman Stephanie Omueti (Chicago, Ill./ Whitney Young) each won one event and earned All-Association honors in another.
Ray took top honors in the weight throw with a national provisional-qualifying distance of 15.83 meters and placed third in the shot put (12.32 m). Omueti led the way in the 200-meter dash (25.88) and was the runner-up in the 55-meter dash (7.33).
Senior Myra Collins (Converse, Texas/ Antonian) posted a first-place showing in the long jump (5.38 m).
Senior Appie Hirve (Burke, Va./ Jefferson Science & Math) and freshman Malgorzata Bujarska (DeKalb, Ill./ DeKalb) earned All-Association accolades in two events.
Hirve placed second in the triple jump with a national provisional-qualifying height of 11.42 meters and third in the long jump (5.11 m). Bujarska was the third-place finisher in the 55- and 200-meter dashes (7.34, 26.68).
Freshmen Kristin Constantine (Naperville, Ill./ Waubonsie Valley) and Bianca Scott (Excelsior, Minn./ Minnetonka) notched second-place finishes, Constantine in the shot put (12.79 m) and Scott in the high jump (1.61 m).
Senior Somayeh Jahedi (Clarendon Hills, Ill./ Hinsdale Central) and junior Meaghan Ehrhard (Longmeadow, Mass./ Longmeadow) finished third in the triple jump (10.98 m) and 55-meter hurdles (8.98), respectively.
The Chicago 1,600-meter relay team comprised of freshman Leah Kachelmacher (Edina, Minn./ Hopkins), Omueti, freshman Ashley Eaves (Mt. Pleasant, Iowa/ Mt. Pleasant), and senior Cynthia Lin (State College, Pa./ State College) finished second with a time of 4:09.22.
