Maroons Finish Second at UAA Championship

CHICAGO -- Featuring seven individual champions and a first-place relay team, the University of Chicago women's outdoor track & field team claimed second place at the 2008 University Athletic Association Championships Saturday and Sunday at the Ted Haydon Track.

Washington (Mo.) University edged Chicago 259 to 243.5 to win the team title. Emory University finished a distant third with 116.5 points.

Freshman Stephanie Omueti (Chicago, Ill./ Whitney Young) took top honors in the 100- and 200-meter runs, both with NCAA Division III provisional-qualifying times (12.33, 25.27).

Omeuti joined seniors Cynthia Lin (State College, Pa./ State College) and Nofi Mojidi (Silver Spring, Md./ Bullis School) and freshman Malgorzata Bujarska (DeKalb, Ill./ DeKalb) as the Maroons set a UAA record in the 400-meter relay (48.32).

Junior Rachel Venezia (Canton, Mass./ Canton) and sophomores Nicole Murphy (Coppell, Texas/ Coppell) and Claire Ray (Park Ridge, Ill./ St. Ignatius) each established UAA records.

Venezia set a conference mark in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:53.24). She also placed third in the 5,000-meter run (17:30.04). Both of her performances met national provisional-qualifying standards.

Murphy notched a league record in the shot put (14.08 m) in addition to placing third in the hammer throw (42.43). Her shot put effort was good for a provisional-qualifying mark.

Ray set a UAA record in the discus (45.01 m) and was the runner-up in the shot put (13.03) and hammer throw (42.77). She met provisional-qualifying standards in both the discus and shot.

Junior Tiffany Hosten (Tucson, Ariz./ Tucson Magnet) and freshmen Kristin Constantine (Naperville, Ill./ Waubonsie Valley) also garnered All-Association honors in throwing events. Hosten won the hammer throw (43.53 m), while Constantine finished third in the discus (40.10 m) and shot (12.48 m).

Senior Appie Hirve (Burke, Va./ Jefferson Science & Math) won the UAA title in the high jump (1.56 m) and posted a provisional-qualifying distance (11.45 m) en route to placing second in the triple jump.

In addition to her showing on the Maroons' UAA record-setting 400-meter relay team, Bujarska placed second in the 100-meter dash (12.56) and third in the 200 (25.88). Also a member of the 400-meter relay quartet, Lin was the third-place finisher in the triple jump (10.97 m).

Four other Maroons claimed All-UAA honors, giving Chicago 14 all-conference athletes on the weekend.

Senior Myra Collins (Converse, Texas/ Antonian) and freshman Ashley Eaves (Mt. Pleasant, Iowa/ Mt. Pleasant) notched runner-up performances, Collins in the long jump (5.40 m) and Eaves in the 400-meter hurdles (1:06.85).

Junior Meaghan Ehrhard (Longmeadow, Mass./ Longmeadow) and sophomore Emma Finestone (Belmont, Mass./ Belmont) finished third in the 100-meter hurdles (15.83) and long jump (5.38 m), respectively.
