Maroons Fall at Concordia

RIVER FOREST, Ill. -- Concordia University Chicago scored 12 runs in the bottom of the third inning en route to a 23-10 win over the University of Chicago baseball team Wednesday afternoon.

Concordia (10-9) pounded out 26 hits -- nine for extra bases -- off eight Chicago hurlers as the Maroons returned to action for the first time since concluding their season-opening spring break trip in Arizona this past Saturday.

Chicago (5-6) trailed 15-2 after three innings before plating five runs in the fourth and one in the fifth. Concordia answered with eight runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Senior center fielder Kyle Schmitt (Hoffman Estates, Ill./ Fremd) went 3-for-5 with three RBIs for the Maroons, and freshman third baseman Stephen Williams (Malibu, Calif./ Malibu) slugged his fourth home run of the season -- a three-run blast in the fourth inning.

Concordia's Phil Seris homered twice and collected six RBIs. A.J. Anderson (3-2) earned the win, despite being tagged for eight runs over five frames.

Chicago's second pitcher of the day, sophomore John Kozlar (Chicago, Ill./ Mt. Carmel) took the loss after allowing three runs in the second inning.
