Maroons Split Twinbill With Dallas
CRESTWOOD, Ill. -- Junior pitcher Joe Pankow (Naperville, Ill./ North) and sophomore hurler Dan McConologue (Lockport, Ill./ Lockport) turned in strong performances as the University of Chicago baseball team split a doubleheader with the University of Dallas Saturday at Standard Bank Stadium, the home of the Frontier League's Windy City Thunderbolts.
Pankow went the distance as the Maroons took game one 10-2. Pankow, who won his sixth consecutive decision dating back to last year, allowed just four hits without an earned run. He walked four and fanned four.
Freshman third baseman Stephen Williams (Malibu, Calif./ Malibu) provided Chicago all the runs it would need in the bottom of the first inning with a three-run home run, his fifth of the season. Chicago added five runs in the third inning. Senior center fielder Kyle Schmitt (Hoffman Estates, Ill./ Fremd) capped the frame with a two-run single.
Dallas starter Gabe Sandersius (3-4) gave up six runs over two and one-third innings. Michael Schweiss pitched the rest of the way.
In game two, Dallas hurler Philip Carkhuff threw a two-hitter as the Crusaders won 1-0. Carkhuff (6-1) walked three and struck out nine. Varea Costello's RBI single in the top of the fourth accounted for the game's lone run.
McConologue (2-2) was touched for eight hits and a pair of walks with four strikeouts en route to the complete-game effort.
Chicago (6-7) and Dallas (17-7-1) wrap up their two-day, four-game series Sunday at J. Kyle Anderson Field.
