Maroons Fall to #1 Eastern Connecticut

PHOENIX -- Top-ranked Eastern Connecticut State University pounded out 13 extra-base hits en route to a 20-13 win over the University of Chicago baseball team Tuesday afternoon on the third day of the Maroons' spring break tour.

The Warriors (12-0) jumped out to a 10-0 lead after an inning and a half, before Chicago (2-2) answered with eight runs in the bottom of the second inning. Freshman Trace Capps (Lynwood, Ill./ Bloom) highlighted the inning with a two-out, three-run double.

Eastern Connecticut State added a pair of runs in the third and one in the fourth to increase its lead to 13-8. The Warriors then tacked on seven runs in the game's final four frames.

Sophomore starter Marshall Oium (Temecula, Calif./ Great Oak) took the loss after three innings of work.

Capps and freshman Stephen Williams (Malibu, Calif./ Malibu) each collected three RBIs, while seniors Kyle Schmitt (Hoffman Estates, Ill./ Fremd) and Scott Hofer (San Marino, Calif./ Flintridge Prep) drove in two.
