Maroons Split at IIT
CHICAGO -- The University of Chicago baseball team split a twinbill at the Illinois Institute of Technology Saturday, winning game one 5-1 before dropping a 5-0 decision in the nightcap.
Freshman pitcher Preston Atteberry (Fort Worth, Texas/ Phillips Academy, Mass.) scattered five hits as the Maroons won the opening contest. En route to his first career complete game, Atteberry (2-0) walked three and fanned three.
Chicago plated three runs in the fifth and added two more in the sixth. Sophomore second baseman Nick Fazzari (Wheaton, Ill./ Glenbard South) drove in sophomore right fielder Marshall Oium (Temecula, Calif./ Great Oak) with a one-out single in the fifth for the only run the Maroons would need. Oium singled to lead off the frame and stole second.
Sean Irish (0-1) took the loss after allowing three runs in four and one-third innings.
Five IIT hurlers combined to hold the Maroons (19-12-1) to three hits in game two as the Scarlet Hawks (24-23) salvaged the doubleheader split. Branden Schombert (7-3) earned the win.
IIT scored all five of its runs in the bottom of the sixth as it took advantage of three Chicago errors in the inning. Brian Skelna provided the key hit with a two-run single off Oium (2-3), who took the loss despite allowing only five hits over six frames.
