Maroons Split With Luther

PHOENIX -- The University of Chicago baseball team split a doubleheader against Luther College Wednesday on the fourth day of the Maroons' spring break tour.

Chicago dropped the first game 9-5, as 12 of the contest's 14 runs came in the opening inning. The Maroons plated four runs in the top of the first, before Luther put up eight in its half of the inning.

Junior Rob Serpico (Schaumburg, Ill./ Hampshire) delivered a three-run triple in the Maroons' four-run first inning. Senior Kyle Schmitt (Hoffman Estates, Ill./ Fremd) went 3-for-4 with a run scored.

Freshman starting pitcher Rod Nelson (Geneva, Ill./ Geneva) threw five innings and took the loss. Fellow first-year Preston Atteberry (Fort Worth, Texas/ Phillips Academy, Mass.) worked one inning, striking out the side in the sixth.

Chicago (3-3) took the nightcap 12-11. The Maroons led 8-6 after two innings and 11-6 after five, but Luther (10-2) tallied three times in the sixth and twice in the seventh to even the score.

Sophomore Nick Fazzari (Wheaton, Ill./ Glenbard South) doubled with one out in the bottom of the seventh and came around to score the winning run on senior Scott Hofer's (San Marino, Calif./ Flintridge Prep) base hit to right field. Fazzari was 3-for-4 with three runs in the game.

Schmitt doubled and tripled and collected four RBIs, while senior Tommy Gonzalez (Newton, Mass./ North) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a pair of RBIs.

Senior Payton Leonhardt (Wheaton, Ill./ Wheaton-Warrenville South) started the game and tossed six innings. Serpico came on in relief in the seventh and notched the win.
