Chicago Defeats North Central
NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- For the second time in as many games, the University of Chicago baseball team came from behind in the game's final inning in a 13-10 win over North Central College Friday afternoon.
Trailing 10-9 after eight innings, the Maroons (9-9) scored four runs in the top of the ninth. Chicago loaded the bases with one out on base hits from sophomore second baseman Nick Fazzari (Wheaton, Ill./ Glenbard South) and senior center fielder Kyle Schmitt (Hoffman Estates, Ill./ Fremd) and a walk to sophomore left fielder Zach Osman (Long Beach, Ind./ Marquette).
The Maroons scored the tying and go-ahead runs on a North Central error and added a pair of runs on a two-run double off the bat of freshman designated hitter Trace Capps (Lynwood, Ill./ Bloom). Capps drove in the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning as Chicago rallied for a 2-1 win over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in its previous game Wednesday afternoon.
The game was tied 4-4 after three innings and 7-7 after six.
Freshman third baseman Stephen Williams (Malibu, Calif./ Malibu) and senior first baseman Scott Hofer (San Marino, Calif./ Flintridge Prep) drew bases loaded walks in the first and third innings, respectively. The Maroons walked 12 times on the day.
A sacrifice fly from Williams and an RBI single by junior shortstop Rob Serpico (Schaumburg, Ill./ Hampshire) highlighted a three-run Chicago outburst in the sixth inning.
Schmitt's run-scoring single in the seventh gave the Maroons a 9-7 edge. Schmitt was 3-for-5 on the afternoon.
Chicago's third pitcher of the day, sophomore Marshall Oium (Temecula, Calif./ Great Oak), pitched the final three innings to notch his first victory of the year (1-2).
North Central's (5-16) Joe Heller drove in five runs in a losing effort.
