Maroons Win Fourth Straight
CHICAGO -- Sophomore second baseman Nick Fazzari's (Wheaton, Ill./ Glenbard South) two-run triple in the top of the seventh inning plated the go-ahead run as the University of Chicago baseball team defeated North Park University 3-1 Wednesday night at the Holmgren Athletic Complex.
With its fourth consecutive win, Chicago (10-9) raised its record above the .500 mark for the first time since returning from its season-opening spring break trip in Arizona. The victory also marked the third time in as many games that the Maroons won when trailing after six or more innings.
North Park (14-17) led 1-0 when sophomore left fielder Zach Osman (Long Beach, Ind./ Marquette) walked to lead off the seventh inning. Osman moved to third on a one-out single off the bat of senior center fielder Kyle Schmitt (Hoffman Estates, Ill./ Fremd). Fazzari then tripled to bring home both runners and later scored on a wild pitch.
Three Chicago pitchers combined to hold the Vikings to six hits.
Making his first career start, freshman Preston Atteberry (Fort Worth, Texas/ Phillips Academy, Mass.) scattered three hits and two walks over five scoreless frames. He induced three double plays and pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth.
Sophomore Dan McConologue (Lockport, Ill./ Lockport) allowed a home run to the second batter he faced, North Park's Andy Athans, before retiring five of the next six hitters en route to the win (4-3). Junior Joe Pankow (Naperville, Ill./ North) closed out the game with two scoreless innings to notch his first save.
