Maroons, Northwestern Play to Scoreless Tie

EVANSTON, Ill. -- The University of Chicago and host Northwestern University played five and a half innings of scoreless baseball Wednesday until rain and lightning resulted in the game's cancellation, officially ending the contest in a tie.

Chicago junior pitcher Joe Pankow (Naperville, Ill./ North) allowed only three hits -- all singles -- and did not issue a walk in five innings of work.

Northwestern hurler Francis Brook held the Maroons (18-11-1) to three hits in five innings. Cole Livermore faced four batters in the sixth before the umpires halted play.

Paul Snieder and Tony Vercelli led off the bottom of the second with back-to-back singles for Northwestern (12-31-1), but Pankow induced a double play ball and struck out the next hitter to end the inning.

With one out in the top of the third, sophomore second baseman Nick Fazzari (Wheaton, Ill./ Glenbard South) singled and senior catcher Tom Gonzalez (Newton, Mass./ North) reached on catcher's interference, but a double play ended the threat.

The game marked Chicago's first tie since the 1996 campaign.
