Maroons Sweep #24 Rose-Hulman
CHICAGO -- Freshman designated hitter Trace Capps's (Lynwood, Ill./ Bloom) two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning of game two gave the University of Chicago baseball team a 2-1 victory and capped the Maroons' doubleheader sweep of 24th-ranked Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Wednesday at J. Kyle Anderson Field.
Sophomore hurler Dan McConologue (Lockport, Ill./ Lockport) allowed just one run and four hits in Wednesday's nightcap, but the Maroons trailed 1-0 entering the bottom of the seventh and final inning.
With two outs and two runners aboard, Capps belted a double to deep right field which plated freshman pinch runner Kelly Street (Coralville, Iowa/ Iowa City West) and freshman third baseman Steven Williams (Malibu, Calif./ Malibu) with the tying and winning runs.
McConologue, who walked two and fanned three, evened his record at 3-3 with his fourth complete game in as many starts.
Rose-Hulman's Ryan Fuller and Nick Maloney kept the Maroons off the scoreboard for six innings, before Andrew Markowitz (2-1) came in to pitch the seventh.
Chicago (8-9) scored four runs in the first inning and added seven more in the fifth frame en route to a 12-4 win in Wednesday's opener.
Williams hit his sixth home run of the year, a two-run blast to center field, in the first inning. In the fifth, senior first baseman Scott Hofer (San Marino, Calif./ Flintridge Prep) had two hits, a run, and an RBI as the Maroons sent 13 batters to the plate.
Hofer, Williams, senior catcher Tom Gonzalez (Newton, Mass./ North), and senior right fielder Travis Blane (Valparaiso, Ind./ Valparaiso) each had a pair of RBIs in the game one rout.
Junior pitcher Joe Pankow (Naperville, Ill./ North) won his seventh consecutive decision dating back to last season and improved to 4-0 this spring with his third complete game. He allowed runs in each of the first four frames before shutting the Engineers (20-10) down the rest of the way.
