Maroons Win Spring Opener

PHOENIX -- The University of Chicago baseball team opened its 2009 season with a 22-4 win over Knox College Sunday on the first game of its season-opening spring break 10-game tour.

Freshmen Stephen Williams (Malibu, Calif./ Malibu) and Trace Capps (Lynwood, Ill./ Bloom) led the Maroons' attack. Williams went 3-for-5 with five RBIs, including a two-run home run. Capps went 3-for-4 with four runs scored and three driven in. Junior right-hander Joe Pankow (Naperville, Ill./ North) fanned six hitters over six innings to notch the victory.

Chicago (1-0) returns to action Monday, Mar. 23 with a doubleheader against the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
