Maroons Fall to Washington, Defeat Case in Extra Innings
CHICAGO -- The University of Chicago baseball team split a pair of games Sunday at J. Kyle Anderson Field, falling to Washington (Mo.) University 8-1 before defeating Case Western Reserve University 9-8 in 12 innings.
Washington (20-9) took advantage of three Chicago errors to score four unearned runs off junior pitcher Joe Pankow (Naperville, Ill./ North), who suffered his first loss of the season in five decisions after 8.1 innings of work.
Gregg Kennedy led the Bears at the plate, going 3-for-5 with three RBIs.
Senior center fielder Kyle Schmitt (Hoffman Estates, Ill./ Fremd) collected a pair of hits and the Maroons' lone RBI off Washington hurler Brian Williams (6-2), who went the distance.
Freshman third baseman Stephen Williams's (Malibu, Calif./ Malibu) base hit with two outs in the bottom of the 12th inning plated Schmitt with the winning run as the Maroons defeated Case in Sunday's nightcap.
Chicago (12-10) trailed 4-2 before scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a 5-4 lead. Schmitt, Williams, and senior first baseman Scott Hofer (San Marino, Calif./ Flintridge Prep) each drove in the runs in the inning.
Case's Jimmy Abed doubled home a run and scored later in the frame as the Spartans scored three times in the ninth to go up 7-5.
A run-scoring single off the bat of senior catcher Tom Gonzalez (Newton, Mass./ North) capped a two-run Chicago ninth-inning rally and sent the game into extra frames.
Matt Richards's RBI groundout in the top of the 10th put Case on top 8-7, but Hofer answered with a run-scoring single in the bottom of the inning to even the score.
Sophomore Marshall Oium (Temecula, Calif./ Great Oak), the Maroons' fourth pitcher of the game, earned the win (2-2) with three scoreless innings of relief. Oium started the game as the designated hitter and was 2-for-6 with a run and an RBI.
Taylor Lorenz (0-1) took the loss for the Spartans (12-33).
