Maroons Rally to Defeat Wheaton
SCHAUMBURG, Ill. -- Senior catcher Tom Gonzalez (Newton, Mass./ North), who drove in a run earlier in the game, singled and scored the go-ahead run in the top of 10th inning as the University of Chicago baseball team defeated Wheaton (Ill.) College 9-6 Wednesday at Alexian Field.
The victory marked the Maroons' fifth come-from-behind win in their last eight games and their second extra innings decision in their last three outings.
Wheaton (20-16) took a 3-2 lead when Charlie Antal clubbed a three-run home run in the bottom of the third inning.
An RBI groundout by Gonzalez evened the score at 3-3 in the fourth, but Wheaton answered with runs in the fourth and fifth to go up 5-3.
Chicago (14-10) drew back to even on senior first baseman Scott Hofer's (San Marino, Calif./ Flintridge Prep) two-run double in the sixth, but the Thunder added a run in their half of the eighth to take a 6-5 lead.
Junior shortstop Rob Serpico (Schaumburg, Ill./ Hampshire) tied the game in the top of the ninth with a one-out single, plating freshman pinch runner Kelly Street (Coralville, Iowa/ Iowa City West). Street ran for Hofer, who led off the frame with a base hit.
Gonzalez led off the 10th with an infield single and moved to second when senior center fielder Kyle Schmitt (Hoffman Estates, Ill./ Fremd) reached on an error. Another Wheaton error on sophomore second baseman Nick Fazzari's (Wheaton, Ill./ Glenbard South) sacrifice bunt brought Gonzalez and Schmitt home. Fazzari later scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of freshman third baseman Stephen Williams (Malibu, Calif./ Malibu).
Chicago's third pitcher of the day, sophomore John Kozlar (Chicago, Ill./ Mount Carmel) earned his first career victory with an inning and a third of relief. Junior Joe Pankow (Naperville, Ill./ North) pitched a scoreless 10th to notch his second save.
