Maroons Fall Twice

BELOIT, Wis. -- The University of Chicago softball team dropped a pair of games at Beloit College Saturday, falling 3-1 to the host Buccaneers before losing 3-2 to Loras College.

Chicago and Beloit (8-15) were tied 1-1 after three and one-half innings, but a two-out, two-run single off the bat of Molly Dickson in the bottom of the fourth proved to be the difference.

The Maroons scored their lone run in the top of the third when freshman first baseman Liz Payonk's (Palos Heights, Ill./ Stagg) triple plated junior pinch runner Alison Feibel (Gorham, Maine/ Gorham).

Junior starting pitcher Kathleen Duffy (Hoffman Estates, Ill./ Barrington) was touched for three hits, three walks, and three runs over five innings. She fell to 4-3 on the season. Freshman reliever Glynis Fagan (Ramsey, N.J./ Ramsey) tossed a scoreless sixth inning.

A two-run double by Michelle Bahl in the top of the third inning in Saturday's second game helped lift Loras (10-9) past the Maroons (10-8). Dahl's hit gave the Duhawks a 3-1 lead after three innings.

A Duffy RBI groundout scored freshman pitcher Sarah Neuhaus (Berkeley, Calif./ Berkeley) in the game's opening frame. Duffy then doubled and scored when Payonk reached on an error in the bottom of the fourth.

Despite allowing just one earned run over six innings, Neuhaus (6-4) took the loss. She struck out six while walking only one. Junior reliever Lauren White (Oakland, Calif./ Bentley School) set Loras down in order in the top of the seventh.
