Maroons Win One, Lose One in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The University of Chicago softball team split a pair of games Thursday on the fourth day of its spring break tour. After defeating Buffalo State University 2-0, the Maroons dropped a 13-0 decision to Wellesley College.

In Thursday's opening contest, freshman Sarah Neuhaus (Berkeley, Calif./ Berkeley) tossed her fourth consecutive shutout, allowing just three hits as the Maroons blanked Buffalo State (6-3). Neuhaus, who walked one and struck out nine, held Buffalo State without a base hit through 5.2 innings.

Sophomore Sara Whaley (Long Beach, Calif./ Bakersfield Christian) drove in both Chicago runs with a two-out single in the top of the first inning and a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

In the second game, Wellesley (6-6) exploded for 11 runs in the top of the second inning and went on to snap the Maroons' (6-2) four-game winning streak. Neuhaus (4-1) suffered her first loss of the year after throwing 27 scoreless frames in her first four starts.

After going 1-for-4 against Buffalo State, senior Jen Jacobson (Schaumburg, Ill./ Conant) went 0-for-2 against Wellesley, halting her hitting streak at 32 games dating back to last season. Jacobson's streak was among the longest in the NCAA Division III in recent years. Heather Bortz of Moravian College established the Division III record by hitting in 44 straight games from April 15, 2003 to April 17, 2004.
