Chicago Wins Two

NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- Junior Kathleen Duffy (Hoffman Estates, Ill./ Barrington) and freshman Sarah Neuhaus (Berkeley, Calif./ Berkeley) pitched complete games as the University of Chicago softball team won a pair of games Saturday at North Central College.

Duffy (4-1) threw a two-hitter as the Maroons defeated Calvin College 4-1 in Saturday's opening contest. She also contributed at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI.

Chicago scored twice in the first inning on an RBI double from Duffy and a run-scoring groundout off the bat of freshman first baseman Liz Payonk (Palos Heights, Ill./ Stagg). Senior shortstop Jen Jacobson (Schaumburg, Ill./ Conant) delivered an RBI single as part of a two-run second inning. Duffy, Jacobson, and sophomore left fielder Lori Knapp (Chicago, Ill./ St. Ignatius) each collected two hits.

Kristin Folkert (2-6) took the loss for Calvin (2-14).

Chicago (10-4) took advantage of four North Central (9-5) errors en route to a 4-2 win in Saturday's second game.

Payonk provided the game's offensive highlight with a two-run home run -- the first of her career -- as the Maroons jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one inning. The Maroons added single runs in the fourth and sixth; all four runs were unearned against Cardinal hurler Holly Roadruck (3-3).

Neuhaus allowed nine hits and two runs (one earned) as she raised her record to 6-2. She collected five strikeouts without issuing a base on balls.
