Maroons Drop Two to Carthage

CHICAGO -- The University of Chicago softball team lost both halves of a doubleheader to Carthage College Friday at Stagg Field, falling 1-0 in game one and 4-3 in extra innings in the nightcap.

Carthage hurler Kelsey Epping (12-3) held the Maroons to one hit in the opening contest. The Lady Reds scored the game's only run in the top of the sixth when Jacquelyn Tassone, who led off the inning with a single, stole home on the front end of a double steal.

Senior shortstop Jen Jacobson (Schaumburg, Ill./ Conant) spoiled Epping's no-hit bid with a two-out double to center field in the bottom of the sixth.

Freshman pitcher Sarah Neuhaus (Berkeley, Calif./ Berkeley) fell to 6-5 despite allowing just six hits and one run over seven frames. She has held opponents to fewer than two earned runs in nine of her 11 starts.

The Maroons (10-10) took a 3-1 lead into the top of the seventh in game two, but Carthage (20-8) scored twice to tie the game as the result of three hits and a critical Chicago error. Heather Johnson and Stephanie Noel delivered back-to-back RBIs.

Chicago committed its fourth error of the game with two runners on and two outs in the top of the eighth, allowing Jess Fijolek to score the winning run.

Neuhaus's first career home run leading off the bottom of the first and a run-scoring single by Jacobson in the second gave the Maroons a 2-1 lead. Chicago added another run in the fifth on an RBI single off the bat of freshman first baseman Liz Payonk (Palos Heights, Ill./ Stagg).

Junior Lauren White (Oakland, Calif./ Bentley School) went the distance for the Maroons. White (0-2) allowed seven hits and four walks while fanning six.

Alyssa Schrader (1-0) pitched the final five innings in relief to earn the victory.

Carthage extended its winning streak to four games, while the Maroons' losing skid reached six games.
