Maroons Split at North Park
CHICAGO -- In its first action since returning from last week's spring break trip, the University of Chicago softball team split a doubleheader Thursday at North Park University.
Freshman pitcher Sarah Neuhaus (Berkeley, Calif./ Berkeley) tossed a complete-game shutout as the Maroons took game one 4-0. Neuhaus (5-2) scattered eight hits, did not issue a walk, and struck out eight en route to her fifth shutout in seven starts this season.
Back-to-back doubles from junior third baseman Kathleen Duffy (Hoffman Estates, Ill./ Barrington) and freshman first baseman Liz Payonk (Palos Heights, Ill./ Stagg) highlighted a three-run fifth inning. Duffy drove in the game's first run before Payonk delivered a two-run double.
Chicago (8-4) jumped to a 4-0 lead in game two, but North Park (8-8) scored six runs in the bottom of the third inning and held on for an 8-7 win. The Maroons rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh, but stranded the tying run at second base.
Freshman right fielder Caroline Rivero (Miami, Fla./ Our Lady of Lourdes Academy) collected three RBIs, while junior third baseman Lauren White (Oakland, Calif./ Berkeley School) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
Duffy (3-1) allowed six runs over four innings as she lost for the first time in four decisions.
North Park hurler Mallory Bieritz (3-4) went the distance and at the plate was 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs.
