Chicago Wins Two in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The University of Chicago softball team improved to 5-1 on its spring break tour with a 6-4 win over Mount Vernon Nazarene University and a 5-0 decision over Western Connecticut State University Wednesday afternoon.

Junior Kathleen Duffy (Hoffman Estates, Ill./ Barrington) posted a complete-game victory and delivered a pair of RBIs as the Maroons defeated NAIA rival Mount Vernon Nazarene (2-2) in Wednesday's opening contest. Duffy (2-0) allowed just one earned run over seven innings. She walked two and recorded three strikeouts.

Chicago trailed 2-1 after five innings before tallying four times in the top of the sixth.

Sophomore Sara Whaley (Long Beach, Calif./ Bakersfield Christian) had two hits, including a double, and drove in two runs. Senior Jen Jacobson (Schaumburg, Ill./ Conant) was 2-for-4 with three runs scored.

In Wednesday's second game, freshman Sarah Neuhaus (Berkeley, Calif./ Berkeley) scattered three hits and fanned nine en route to her third straight shutout as the Maroons (5-1) defeated Western Connecticut State (3-7).

Freshman Liz Payonk (Palos Heights, Ill./ Stagg) had two hits in four at-bats with a run scored, while Duffy and Whaley each delivered a run-scoring base hit.

Jacobson went 1-for-2 to extend her hitting streak to 31 games dating back to last season.
