Chicago Wins Two in Season Debut
CLERMONT, Fla. -- The University of Chicago softball team won a pair of games as it opened its 2009 campaign Sunday on the first day of its 10-game spring break tour.
In Sunday's first game, the Maroons defeated the University of Southern Maine 6-3. Junior pitcher Kathleen Duffy (Hoffman Estates, Ill./ Barrington) posted a complete-game victory and at the plate went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs. Senior shorstop Jen Jacobson (Schaumburg, Ill./ Conant) went 1-for-3 with a run scored, while freshman Sarah Neuhaus (Berkeley, Calif./ Berkeley) collected two hits in four at-bats and scored twice.
The Maroons then blanked D'Youville College 8-0 in Sunday's second game. Neuhaus tossed a complete-game shutout and fanned five in her collegiate debut. She also went 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBIs, and a run scored. Jacobson, Duffy, sophomore Sarah Whaley (Long Beach, Calif./ Bakersfield Christian), and freshman Liz Payonk (Palos Heights, Ill./ Stagg) each collected a pair of hits.
With hits in both games, Jacobson extended her hitting streak to 27 games dating back to last season.
Chicago (2-0) returns to action Monday, Mar. 23 with games against Elmhurst College and Eastern Connecticut State University.
