Maroons Celebrate Homecoming with 38-7 Victory

CHICAGO -- Junior quarterback Marshall Oium (Temecula, Calif./ Great Oak) threw for 472 yards and five touchdowns -- both school records -- as the University of Chicago football team defeated Denison University 38-7 on Homecoming Saturday at Stagg Field.

Oium connected on 24 of 45 attempts. Freshman wideout Dee Brizzolara (Aurora, Ohio/ Aurora) was the recipient of three Oium scoring strikes and finished the day with 217 yards on eight catches. Senior wideout Joe Stoner (Chicago, Ill./ Loyola Academy) had 121 yards on seven receptions as the Maroons won their third consecutive game.

Oium's 472 yards surpassed the previous Chicago modern era (since 1969) mark of 440 (Josh Dunn, 2002) while his five TD throws topped by one the previous record accomplished four times by two different players.

Chicago (4-2) scored on its third play from scrimmage on a 43-yard pass from Oium to junior wide receiver Clay Wolff (St. Louis, Mo./ Christian Brothers). Late in the opening stanza, Oium connected with Brizzolara on a 73-yard touchdown completion -- the longest pass play by Chicago in 128 games dating back to 1995.

Freshman Jeff Sauer's (Saddle River, N.J./ Northern Highlands) 32-yard field goal midway through the second quarter accounted for the only scoring of period as the Maroons took a 17-0 halftime lead.

Chicago put the game away in the third quarter with a pair of Oium-to-Brizzolara touchdown passes, a 16-yard completion four minutes into the quarter and a 25-yard strike at the 4:03 mark.

The teams traded touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Oium and Wolff hooked up for an 8-yard touchdown on the second play of the period. Wolff caught six passes for 95 yards on the day.

Denison (2-5) got on the board with 3:45 remaining on an 18-yard Josh Atkins scamper.

Chicago outgained the Big Red by a 547-192 margin. Denison collected 69 of those yards on its lone scoring drive with time winding down in the contest.

Junior cornerback Steve Tsilimos (Lisbon, Ohio/ Anderson) intercepted two passes for Chicago, while sophomore defensive end Matt Sargent (Sterling Heights, Mich./ St. Mary's) collected a pair of sacks.

Nick Krempasky rushed for 98 yards on 21 carries as Denison fell for the second time in as many weeks.

Chicago kicks off University Athletic Association play at home next Saturday, Oct. 31, when it entertains 12th-ranked Case Western Reserve University at noon. The Spartans will bring a 28-game regular season winning streak to Stagg Field.
