Chicago Falls to Elmhurst

CHICAGO -- Elmhurst College's Jimmy Jenkins rushed for 116 yards and one touchdown as the Blue Jays defeated the University of Chicago football team 31-6 Saturday night at Stagg Field.

Jenkins led an Elmhurst ground attack that amassed 238 yards and two touchdowns, while quarterbacks Phil Pedi and Joe Furco combined to throw for 243 yards and a pair of scores.

Elmhurst (3-0) scored the only points of the first quarter on Scottie Williams's 9-yard run with 28 seconds remaining in the period. That play followed a 38-yard completion from Pedi to Ryan Bock.

The Blue Jays scored on consecutive drives in the second quarter en route to taking a 17-0 halftime lead. Elmhurst capped a 12-play, 84-yard drive with a 12-yard strike from Pedi to Rodney Payton with 9:14 remaining in the half, then added a Tyler Lomnicki 35-yard field goal at the 2:59 mark.

Chicago (1-2) scored its only points of the evening when junior quarterback Marshall Oium (Temecula, Calif./ Great Oak) connected with freshman wideout Dee Brizzolara (Aurora, Ohio/ Aurora) on a 50-yard touchdown completion late in the third quarter, but Elmhurst answered with a 2-yard pass from Furco to Blake Veldhuis on its next possession.

Jenkins, who averaged 10.5 yards on 11 carries, capped the scoring with a 55-yard scamper early in the fourth quarter.

Pedi completed 10 of 15 attempts for 154 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Furco was 5-of-9 for 89 yards with one TD and no picks.

Oium completed 25 of 47 passes for 287 yards and one touchdown with one interception. He was sacked on four occasions.

Brizzolara caught seven passes for 120 yards and finished the night with 213 all-purpose yards.

The Maroons are idle next week before returning to action at Oberlin College on Saturday, Oct. 10.
