Maroons Defeat Oberlin 38-17
OBERLIN, Ohio -- Junior wide receiver Clay Wolff (St. Louis, Mo./ Christian Brothers) threw for one touchdown, rushed for another, and caught a touchdown pass as the University of Chicago football team defeated Oberlin College 38-17 Saturday at Savage Stadium.
Off a double reverse on the Maroons' first play from scrimmage, Wolff connected with freshman wideout Dee Brizzolara (Aurora, Ohio/ Aurora) for a 64-yard touchdown completion.
Wolff then scored on consecutive offensive plays on Chicago's first two drives of the second half.
Junior quarterback Marshall Oium (Temecula, Calif./ Great Oak) found Wolff in the end zone from 4 yards out to cap a five-play, 45-yard drive to start the third quarter, giving the Maroons 24-3 lead.
Oberlin (0-5) answered with a 56-yard David Kalgren touchdown run on its next play, but Wolff then scampered 44 yards into the end zone on Chicago's next offensive snap to increase its lead to 31-10.
Sophomore tailback Francis Adarkwa (Wheaton, Ill./ Wheaton-Warrenville South) rushed for 180 yards and two touchdowns as Chicago (2-2) amassed 222 yards on the ground. He scored on a 2-yard plunge early in the second quarter to put the Maroons on top 14-3 before scoring the Maroons' final touchdown from a yard away late in the third stanza.
Oium finished the day 21 for 33 for 236 yards and one touchdown and no interceptions. Brizzolara caught five passes for 129 yards, while Wolff had 61 yards on eight receptions. Adarkwa caught six balls for 78 yards.
Chicago outgained the Yeomen 522-227 and held a 31:09-28:51 edge in time of possession.
Kalgren rushed for 96 yards on the afternoon, but was just 8-for-19 for 68 yards through the air.
Freshman linebacker Alex Dzierbicki (Clinton Township, Mich./ Chippewa Valley) led the defensive effort with 14 tackles, including one of the Maroons' season-high five sacks.
Chicago travels to St. Paul, Minn., next Saturday to face Macalester College at 1 p.m.
