Maroons Drop Home Opener to #13 Wabash

CHICAGO -- Wabash College quarterback Matt Hudson threw four touchdown passes as the 13th-ranked Little Giants defeated the University of Chicago 48-10 in the Maroons' home debut Saturday at Stagg Field.

Chicago stayed with Wabash throughout most of the first half until the Little Giants found the end zone twice during a 30-second span late in the second quarter.

Wabash (2-0) led 17-10 after an explosive first quarter for both teams.

The Little Giants scored on the seventh play of the game when Hudson hooked up with Kody LeMond on a 34-yard completion. Chicago (1-1) answered on a 33-yard scoring strike from junior quarterback Marshall Oium (Temecula, Calif./ Great Oak) to freshman wideout Dee Brizzolara (Aurora, Ohio/ Aurora) with 5:37 left in the period.

Wabash then sandwiched an 18-yard Hudson-to-Tommy Mambourg touchdown pass and a 27-yard Spencer Whitehead field goal around a 27-yard field goal from Chicago freshman Jeff Sauer (Saddle River, N.J./ Northern Highlands).

Mambourg, who gained 119 yards on 27 carries, scored on a 1-yard plunge early in the second quarter to put the Little Giants on top 24-10.

Wabash then took advantage of two Maroons' miscues to score two touchdowns in the final 2:04 of the first half.

Midway through the second quarter, Chicago moved from its own 26-yard line inside Wabash territory, but a botched snap on a second down play helped to stall the Maroons' drive. Two plays later, Hudson connected with LeMond on a 77-yard touchdown completion. Wabash then recovered a Chicago fumble deep inside Maroons' territory and one play later scored on a 6-yard completion from Hudson to Wes Chamblee.

Wabash scored the only points of the second half on a 23-yard Whitehead field goal in the final minute of the third stanza and on a 22-yard Kyle Stevens run with 4:23 remaining in the contest.

Hudson was successful on 12 of 22 attempts for 273 yards. LeMond had 122 yards on just three receptions.

Oium finished the day 17 for 32 for 153 yards. He connected with junior wideout Clay Wolff (St. Louis, Mo./ Christian Brothers) 11 times for 99 yards.

The Maroons return to action next Saturday, Sept. 26, when they host Elmhurst College in their only night game of the year at 6 p.m.
